How to Plan Great Blog Posts In 5 Steps + free printable

I’m not gonna sit here and pretend I have this blogging thing down and I’m cranking out amazing blog posts every time.

Because I don’t. But I can at least say that I’ve learned a lot in my year and a half of blogging.

I’ve heard from some new bloggers that they don’t know how to write their thoughts down in a coherent blog post sometimes. I’ve definitely been there, and it can be frustrating at times.

So I’m going to show you how to plan great blog posts in 5 simple steps.

Note: this is more for planning instructional/how-to posts. Also, posting on Wednesdays is my new schedule! Tags, awards, and things like that will be on another day…

Step 01. Decide on your title

Assuming you already have a topic in mind, pick an attention-grabbing title to go with it. Sometimes, a good title won’t come to you until you’ve figure out other elements of your blog post.

Your title should promise something: a solution to a problem. If you have a number of steps as your solution to the problem, include that in your title.

Step 02. Write your intro

Intros are hard, aren’t they? Sometimes I just sit there, staring at the blinking cursor. But having a good intro sets the scene for the valuable information you’re about to give. In your intro, try to do this: 1) present the problem, 2) relate to the problem, 3) promise the solution.

Step 03. Figure out your bullet points

Readers are able to get through a blog post easier when it’s broken up in sections, like bullets points or steps. On a separate piece of paper, write out the bullet points of your post: the subtopics you want to cover. Once you have this, then you’re set to write the body of your blog post.

Step 04. The wrap up

This is the hardest part for me.

Maybe re-list all your points as a quick review for the readers. Now would be the perfect time to present a printable or freebie that helps your readers take what you taught them to the next step and apply it to their work.

Step 05. Start a discussion

After (or before) your sign-off, ask your readers a few questions related to your post topic to get the discussions started in the comments.

And there you have it! How to write great blog posts in 5 steps! And speaking of providing a free printable for your readers, I have one for you! Click the graphic below to get access to a free template to plan your blog posts. Happy blogging!

[…] It’s wonderful that WordPress and Mailchimp allows you to schedule content. You never have to be scrambling to get a post out on time! You just have to block some time every so often to work on several blog posts (yes, sometimes instead of writing). Maybe write a few posts in one sitting every other week. Check out my post here about planning great blog posts (and get a free printable!).Β  […]
