Wow, it’s been a long time since my last Coffee Talk.
If you’re new here, Coffee Talks is a new-ish series for just sitting down to chat. I don’t usually ramble on this blog, so this series is a chance to just tell you what’s on my mind.
Usually how this works is that I “set the scene”; help you imagine a cozy atmosphere to get us in the mood to share our thoughts…
Okay, so imagine we’re sitting in some trendy, exclusive coffee shop in a high level of a city building. Windows take up most of the walls, allowing customers to view the scenery and let sunlight in. Business is slow this early evening, so things are quiet. Just soft murmuring conversations and calming jazz playing. We have a spot near the window, a couple of comfy leather armchairs that squeak when you move. And it’s raining a bit, just a soft pattering against the window, enough to lull anyone to sleep. Our ceramic mugs of coffee warm our hands and fill the air with the earthy scent.
Take a slow, deep breath.
Calm? Good. π
Boy am I realizing how hard indie publishing is… I’m hoping to publish my superhero novel Embers (learn more about it here) in 2021. I’ve been researching A TON, creating a publishing plan, marketing and social media content plans, and a list of resources and services for when I’m ready to start the process. There’s so much work involved and I feel an intense admiration for the indies rocking their business.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how important Christian storytellers are to this world. Some may think that writing doesn’t really matter, that it doesn’t really make a huge impact. But I think that it does. Stories have a magical and powerful way to change someone. And God’s given us a passion for writing for a reason.Β I think writing does truly matter to this world. You truly matter.Β Maybe I’ll do a blog post on that. π
You know, there are a lot of things that can take away the joy of writing. I’ve been studying a lot about the business-side of writing, and it’s fascinating. But to be completely honest, sometimes all of that platform-building, email list-growing, productivity-managing stuff can make me forget why I write.Β I write because I love it and I can’t NOT do it. I write because God has given me a love for telling stories and a mission to impact people with it.Β There will be days when you don’t feel like writing, when you feel discouraged or unmotivated. Sometimes clearing away the clutter by remembering your WHY is all you need to get you going again. Even with my new series about learning how to treat writing like a business and building your platform before you get a book published, it’s so important to remember the foundation of what we do.
I want to do something a bit different for future Coffee Talks. I think it’d be fun to answer a few questions from you all. Doesn’t have to be writing or reading related, so just drop your random questions below and I will answer them in the next part of the series. π Depending on how many there are, I’m not sure if I can answer them all. But we’ll see…
Well… *sips coffee* I guess that’s it for now, folks. I think future Coffee Talks will be a bit longer, but I hope you enjoyed this. Thanks for joining me at this trendy city coffee shop. π Feel free to share your thoughts with me! Have a lovely day, friends!

Wonderful point, Jenna! Thank you for reminding me why we write in the first place – itβs so easy to forget. <3
π I’m glad you found this helpful. Thanks so much for your support<3
I absolutely adore the scene you set. <333
Indie publishing… I can imagine. In all reality, I'm going probably to be an indie author too, and it's a bit scary. xD
Amen! Writing is SUCH a powerful thing, and I think we should really take advantage of that! It's truly magical. :))
Here's some questions for you: π
What indie author do you most look up to?
What book has had the most impact in your life?
What is your favorite type of character?
Favorite snack?
Also, I am INSANELY excited for Embers. (!!!!!)
π
Welcome to the aspiring indie authors club. π
YES!
Thank you for the questions!
AHH it makes me so happy to know you’re excited too! π
I just love these!! It feels so real. π I so want to see a post on the importance of writing!! Itβs one of those things that I never questioned myself and never thought other people would till they did, and I still feel like I canβt really defend it properly. And amen about why we write. π That really does keep me going some days!
AHHH RANDOM QUESTIONS!!! Iβm dangerous with random questions!! (At camp with a bunch of girls I didnβt know one girl just blurts βWhatβs your deepest, darkest secretβ and that was how we all started talking… π) If you could talk to anyone ever for an hour, who would it be? Do you have an inner monologue (not everyone does…?)? Do you know who Chris Kyle is (again not everyone does, these two things have been recent discoveries for me…)? If you got your own dog what would you name it? Whatβs your funniest typo?
I canβt wait for the next coffee talks post!!
π Yes, I think I’d really like to write a post like that (I’ve kinda already started it a bit). I think I’d benefit from it too.
XD Thanks for the questions!
Thanks for reading, Kassie! <3
This is sooo fun and interesting to read. Keep the good works up. ββ
I LOVE THIS so so much and I’m really glad that Coffee Talks is a series! π
Here’s my questions!
What’s one of your favorite memories from 2019? Something that encourages you when you’re feeling down? If you had a pet monkey what would you name it? Favorite caffeine beverage? (that was random π)
(also just wanted to say that you’re the best at setting scenes. I could legit smell the coffee and hear the soft patter of rain on the windows. πβ€οΈ)
π <3 Me too!
Thanks for the questions!
Aw, thank you, Eden! <3
Beautiful words, Jenna! Yes, we write for God first of all and ourselves second, because our goal is not only to enjoy our art, but to reach people through it.
I’m so excited for Embers! I’ll be cheering you on all the way– I’ve been doing some extensive research on indie vs. trad publishing and it’s truly incredible! I’d love to be trad published, but I definitely wouldn’t mind going indie. It all depends on what happens in the future, I suppose!
Great job! Looking forward to more of these Coffee Talks in the future!!
Thank you so much, Merie! Your words are very encouraging.
π I’m so excited for Embers too! ;P I’ll definitely be keeping you all updated. <3
Thanks!
Wow, that scene was extremely vivid to picture. Well done! *thumbs up* I haven’t actually read any of your previous coffee talks (shame on me) but this was very fun and… it really did feel cozy!
I hope you indie-publishing-journey goes well! I can’t wait to read your story. π I actually haven’t been as interested in writing these days, but I had this idea for reimagining the world before the flood. I don’t know if I’ll actually ever write it or not. *looks up at the ceiling thoughtfully*
Here’s a couple of questions: 1. Have you created any creatures for your stories? (if so, please describe them) 2. Which character of all the ones you’ve created is most like you?
Thank you! π I’m glad you felt cozy.
Thanks! Ooh, your pre-flood idea sounds like it’d be really cool. I hope you write it! π
Thank you for the questions!
AGH, the mood you set is just so beautiful and cozy and – *cries*
I’m so, so excited about Embers being published! π “I think writing does truly matter to this world. You truly matter.” < aww, this is really beautiful, I'd love to see a blog post on that.
Lovely post! <3
π <3
Aw, thanks! <3 I am most definitely going to write this post now. π
Thank you, Ash!
I hope everything goes well for you in self-publishing! That is an interesting point you make about having to balance the business side of writing with the part of you that just enjoys writing. I’ve had to deal with that question with other interests of mine that I’ve thought about turning into a business, but for some reason I never considered that turning writing into a business has the same issue.
Okay, so questions:
-Who’s your favorite character you’ve created?
-What’s your favorite dessert?
-What’s your writing process like? Are you a plotter or a pantser? What’s your preferred way of developing your characters?
Yes, I think that’s something I only recently fully understood. It’s a good thing to remember. π
Thanks for the questions! π
Ahh!! it’s so exciting that you’re moving forward with indie publishing! I hope everything goes well with it. π
Some random questions:
-Ice cream, cake or chocolate?
-What was the last non-fiction book you read?
-Favourite flavour of tea or coffee?
π Thanks, Chelsea!
Thank you for the questions!
Such a lovely and relaxing post, Jenna. β€οΈ Iβve been thinking a lot about platforming and such, so this post was a blessing at just the right time. π
Thank you, Mariposa. π I’m glad this post came at the right time for you. <3
