Unpopular Opinions About Writing & Books

Sometimes saying our unpopular opinions out loud can make us cringe.

That is, in anticipation of the backlash.

But hey, this is a safe space here so why not feel free to share those thoughts that may be a bit controversial? Who knows, you may find that a lot of people agree with your unpopular opinion…

I asked about your unpopular opinions about writing and books on Instagram, and you guys delivered! We’ve got some great ones here. Some I agree with, and some I was surprised by. Let’s get into it…

|Unpopular opinions about books|

“The world could do with a little (or a lot) less romance and a whole lot more family relationships.”

YEEESSS! I agree 100%. I just love strong sibling relationships in fiction.

“I really don’t think Harry Potter is that good.”

I’ve never read it, but I agree anyway. *shrugs*

“Classics are NOT always better.”

Hm, true, true. We do have a lot to learn from quite a few classics, but this is still true.

“Present tense doesn’t hold my attention, it just keeps me disconnected from it.”

Huh, this is the first time I’ve heard this from someone. It’s the exact opposite for me.

“Harry Potter isn’t worth the hype.”

Again, I agree. 😉

“Library books are valid ways of reading.”

FOR SURE!

|Unpopular opinions about writing|

“You don’t have to be inspired to write.”

Y’all know I like to inspire people. XD But this is still true; you’re not always going to feel inspired to write, but you can still get those words down anyway.

“Unspoken ‘rules’ can always be broken if it works artistically for your vision.”

*thinks*

*nods*

Yeah, I think I agree with this one.

“Editing is the fun part.”

Wow…I just…I can’t, I mean…are you okay?

“(1) Plot isn’t nearly as important as good dialogue and character development, (2) Plot is still important though.”

YUP. *thumbs up*

“You don’t have to be a planner or a pantser. You can switch between them for each WIP.”

I think I agree. I do a little bit of this flip-flopping to some degree between my projects.

“Take humongous breaks sometimes.”

This is actually really important, because some people feel so guilty about taking long breaks. Here’s what I have to say: please take breaks when you need to to prevent burnout or to refresh.

“Don’t write every day!”

Contrary to popular opinion, yes, I agree with this one. Setting a goal for writing everyday is awesome, but don’t tear yourself apart with guilt if your schedule (or creativity) just doesn’t allow it.

“Writing by hand is actually better.”

Huh…interesting… I just imagine my hand cramping 24/7 but maybe that’s just because I grip the pen like there’s no tomorrow.

Well, what did you think? Do you agree or disagree with these unpopular opinions?

Let me just add one more unpopular opinion (my own actually)…

Maybe–just maybe–the Lord of the Rings movies are overrated??? *hides* All I know is that I saw the first movie and didn’t really like it (the music was good though).

*gasp* You don’t like the LOTR movies? For shame. D:
Joking, of course. ;D They do certainly pale in comparison to the books.

I’m also in the crazy “Editing is the best part” camp, depending on the project. XD There have definitely been projects I’ve hated (or dreaded… *coughs* Totally haven’t been putting off one project for more than a year because it’s such a mess *cough*), but in an ideal scenario I love seeing everything come together, and reworking things so that the words on the page match the image in my head, and making sure the reader is experiencing the story more or less the way I envisioned… When I’m passionate about the project as a whole, I genuinely adore the editing process. (Though it does still have its rough patches. XD)

I agree with almost all of these, actually! I’m a little surprised some of them are unpopular, lol.

XD Yeah I honestly wish I had read the books before watching the movie…

Well, I guess the writing world needs good editors too, so maybe us editing-haters shouldn’t be so scared of editing-loving people. 😉

      Yeah same! Thanks for reading!

I unashamedly disagree about the Harry Potter opinion; it’s so worth the hype! Rowling is a master storyteller and world builder :). Also, I agree that writing by hand is far better. I write all my drafts by hand first; it’s much more fun, creative, personal, and inspiring (how do you doodle on a computer?).

Lol I thought there would be somebody that strongly disagreed 😉 That’s true; you can’t doodle on a computer. Thanks for reading! <3

I love a good romance but I have to agree that we need more good family relationships! There are so many books where families are either unimportant in the main character’s lives or they are really bad (horrible parents, mean siblings, etc.)
And I agree with you with the LOTR movies. I am not a fan of them, but I do love the story!
I sort of agree with the present tense one. At times I find it so hard to read in that tense. It’s so jarring. Especially after reading other tenses! But I also have to admit that I am getting better at reading them.
The Harry Potter ones I have no opinion (I have starting reading them so I’ll let you know) and the editing one too. I haven’t done it enough to know for sure.
Writing by hand? Sadly, I disagree. I just can’t do it.
The rest I haven’t mentioned I agree with too. (Though I am unsure with the unspoken rules one. What does it mean? So that one is actually no opinion. 😉)

YES! I love seeing family relationships that are strong and close. <3
Oh yes, let us know how you like Harry Potter. 🙂

      Thanks for reading, Miranda! <3

I agree that the HP books are overrated, that writing by hand is better (😂), and that you should be free to flip-flop between pantsing/planning depending on the project. I love past tense too, although it doesn’t make a difference for me because present tense works as well, but I still like past tense more because a lot of present-tense prose styles annoy me 😑 Great post!

YES I grip pens really hard too!! XD I just had to mention that. So writing by hand, although I think it’s an important skill even though today’s society is losing it, I think, writing stories would be… terrible… to do solely by hand. o.o

Harry Potter… they sound like books I’d enjoy to some extent (its fantasy after all), is definitely not worth the hype from what I’ve heard. XP

Yes to switching between pantsing and plotting!!! That’s me. *nods* I’m such an ENFP. XD

Great idea, Jenna! I love these types of posts.

I realized after publishing that comment that some of the sentences are confusing. I was in a little bit of a hurry, yet I had a lot to say, and that doesn’t make for a good, legible comment. So I apologize. 😛

Yeah, some switching can be fun and exciting. 😀

      Thanks so much, Kendra! <3

I agreed with some of these things and maybe disagreed with some, too. 🙂

I really love a good romance, but I will say there is a whole lot of really bad romance out there even from Christian authors. I think that because there is so much bad and unrealistic romance novels out there, it portrays romance in a bad light for at least some people, and it deceives other people. I will also say that I do love to see good family/sibling relationships in books and would love to see more of that.

Yeah, that sounds true. I don’t really read romance, but from what I hear, it’s not always done that well. Well, I guess it’s up to us writers to fix those kinds of things, right? 😉

I agree with most of these! I’ve just been reading Harry Potter and I’m honestly kind of addicted to it in the same way I’m addicted to lollies. Sweet and sugary with not much to them. I like Harry Potter because its so much lighter and easier to read than most of the stuff I’ve been reading lately, but also I don’t think they deserve the cult following they have. They’re just not really that good. I don’t know *shrugs*.

Hmm, I’d never thought of Harry Potter as being a lighter, easier read… I’m glad you enjoy them. 🙂 Thanks for reading! <3
