9 Prayers for Your Writing

I always seem to forget to pray about my writing.

I pray for my spiritual life, my family, friends, different people who are struggling, major events happening in my country, etc. But I always seem to forget about my writing, something I want to do well in, and honor God through.

Why is that? Do you do the same?

Then when I finally do remember to pray about my writing, I don’t know quite how to go about it. If my book’s going splendidly, I’ve forgotten what writer’s block feels like, and I know where this book’s headed, what do I pray about?

There’s always plenty to pray about.

So here’s some small prayers you can pray for ANY stage of your writing process. 🙂

When developing a story idea…

Heavenly Father,

Show me the best elements of this story idea. Show me if this is the story You want me to write right now. Help me to explore all possibilities for this idea and develop it to best convey the message I want to give.

When beginning your first draft…

Heavenly Father,

Give me the courage to battle through this first draft! Help me keep my eyes on the goal no matter how hard this becomes. Give me the motivation, inspiration, and determination to finish this book for You.

When hitting a slump in your writing…

Heavenly Father,

Give me the motivation I need to get out of this slump. Tell me if this isn’t the book You want me to write right now. If it is, give me the strength to finish it.

When you’re feeling discouraged about your writing…

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the passion you’ve given me to write. Please continue to develop my skills, and help me to realize that my writing will never be perfect, but be grateful that You’re using me to write this story. Give me trust about where You’re taking my writing.

When you’re feeling super pumped about your story…

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the joy you’ve given me in writing! Thank you for the opportunity to provide light in the darkness of this world, and show You to those that need it. Thank you for blessing this book, no matter how it goes or how I feel.

When nearing the climax of your story…

Heavenly Father,

Guide my hands as I write this tricky part in my book. Help me to include all the elements I want to include and make everything come together. If things don’t turn out right, give me the strength to dig back in, get my hands dirty and fix things.

When beginning to edit…

Heavenly Father,

Oh, boy…editing. God, help me to just do my best with this tough stage. Show me the areas that need improvement, and help me to uncover the beauty of the story underneath the rough.

When you’re sending your story to beta/alpha readers…

Heavenly Father,

My work is going to be seen by other eyes. Help me to not be afraid about what they might think, instead take all their comments and suggestions and use them to further polish my story. Show my readers all those things that I missed when editing, so I can make this book even better.

When you’re feeling discouraged about your book (after beta/alpha readers)…

Heavenly Father,

I know you’ve given me this passion for writing and the inspiration for this story for a reason, even if it is just to teach only myself something. Give me the courage to keep going, and keep refining my writing to make it better and better. Give me the joy I need to continue to work on this.

Amen.

I hope this will help both you and me to pray for our writing. Because we don’t have this love for storytelling for nothing. God’s given it to us for a reason, a purpose, and a mission. Even if it’s to change one life, and even if that life is our own.

Write on,

These were beautiful, Jenna! I know I don’t pray about my writing like I should, even though I know that makes a difference. And oh, there’s too many things to count that God has taught me through my story—let go and let God, and healing and remembering are always worth it even when it hurts.
