I Deleted My NaNoWriMo Account

Yes, you read that title right.

And you’re probably wondering why in the world I would cut myself off from this organization, this writing challenge that made me feel so connected with writers across the globe. This was something I enjoyed and looked forward to every year, an opportunity to could connect with other writers to support each other as we battled through the challenges. It helped me grow and push myself.

But it had to go.

I’m not going to draw this post out super long or go into a ton of detail. But yes, I deleted my NaNoWriMo account on July 14th, after much thought and fighting my own reluctance. Here’s why…

It was brought to my attention through something another author posted to raise awareness about what the NaNoWriMo organization was doing. The things brought to light were things I’d never even seen, because I didn’t really read the NaNoWriMo emails I got. I did a little digging, asked some people, and looked at my emails. Despite the fact that NaNoWriMo has done great things for my writing and taught me how to manage time and tackle big goals, they are pushing things, promoting things that I strongly disagree with. More specifically, promoting books and stories containing things I strongly disagreed with and believed were unbiblical.

Like I said, I won’t go into a lot of detail now (maybe I will someday). For now, I still plan to make a goal of 50k words for November, but not in affiliation with the NaNoWriMo organization. And I’m currently looking for an alternative to NaNoWriMo where I can still connect with other writers during challenges, but also have something that’s more in-line with my Christian beliefs.

I don’t want to tell you what to do, but I want to encourage you to take a second look at what NaNoWriMo is and if it’s something you want to support. I will keep you all updated on my journey of finding a replacement or alternative to this organization. If you would like to talk more in-depth about what NaNoWriMo is doing or ask me any questions about it, feel free to contact me.

One more bit of news…

On July 30th, I want to do a post all about ethnic diversity in YA books. It will be a compilation of books with diverse characters and also diverse authors. I also want to include messages from writers and readers in our community about the need for more diversity in the book world.ย

So, here’s how you can contribute: follow this link to the Google form to tell me about your favorite diverse books or authors and maybe even share your thoughts about the state of YA books right now.ย

I hope you all are doing well. <3 Have a great week!

There’s a Christian alternative to Nano now called The King’s Daughters Writing Camp — I think @oldfashionedbooklove on IG is the person to contact to ask about it ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, and I now participate in a camp called The King’s Daughters’ Writing Camp. It’s a wonderful Christian camp, as you probably gathered, hehe. If you’re interested at all, shoot me an email! <3

Awesome! You're the second person to mention that; it sounds great! ๐Ÿ˜€ Does the group do challenges like NaNoWriMo does?

I was going to suggest the Kings’ Daughters’ Writing Camp, but Rachel and Kenechi beat me to it!

I haven’t deleted my account yet, but…I’m thinking of it.

I’ve also joined the KDWC, and it’s so much fun!!

Good for you, Jenna! I had been noticing in the emails I was getting from Nano that they were strongly encouraging things that I don’t agree with because of my Christian faith, as well! I’ve thought about leaving Nanowrimo; I don’t know for sure if I will, though. I’ll have to think (and pray) about it some more. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks, Kendra! ๐Ÿ™‚ I just joined an all-girls Christian writing group, so feel free to let me know if you’d ever like info on that. <3

Sounds like you left for the right reasons! God will honor that. I’ve never done NaNoWriMo because I literally have NO time in November (5 family birthdays, Thanksgiving, and work is CRAZY!). However, I’m proud of you for withdrawing from this organization that supports things counter to Scripture. ๐Ÿค—

I really like how you’ve talked about Biblical values here and having to make tricky decisions that could impact on your writing because of them. Just curious, as a Christian, how do you tend to find books that match up with these values? I often find it hard to find ‘clean’ books nowadays and thought it would be interesting to know what you do to find enough to read regularly! Thanks for posting ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for you support, Elizabeth! <3 I totally understand that reading struggle!! I have been able to find authors that I know are Christian and know what they put in their books and basically read everything they publish (Nadine Brandes, Lindsay A Franklin, among others). Another thing you could do is find a publisher that consistently publishes clean books. I really like Enclave Publishing (speculative fiction). I also like to follow friends that I know have the same reading standards as me on Goodreads and I get a lot of ideas from them too. I hope that helps! :)

That’s definitely helpful, especially the idea about following people on Goodreads. Thanks for the advice!

Hey Jenna, thanks for sharing! I decided not to delete my account for now, since I only use NaNo as a writing tracker site, but I respect the decision of those who do.

Do you think you could email me the info about the King’s Daughters group? I’d like to consider that too! (The email I’m using to comment is fine :)) Thanks!
