How to Write Faster With These 6 Tips

We all want the ability to crank out words with lightning speed. Just think of how much faster we’d get first drafts done…

And with NaNoWriMo looming on the horizon, this is the time when writing faster is a big goal. Tips for this skill are like nuggets of gold.

Generally, I don’t worry too much about how fast I write. I decide that I’ll just get it done at my own pace. But yeah, when you have the deadline of writing 50k in one month, I just might want to pick up the pace a little bit.

So, in preparation for this November challenge, I’ve compiled all my tips and advice on how to write faster. Some of these things are ones that I use myself, and other are ones that I’ve heard from others.

Let’s dive in!

01. Word sprints/word wars

I have a lot of fun word warring with friends online: it pushes me to write faster and makes it fun! We usually set a timer for about five minutes, write, then compare how many words were written. The one with the most wins. πŸ™‚ Word wars/sprints are a great way to not only get more words written, but connect with your fellow writers.

You can also do a word sprint by yourself, of course. Set a timer for a short amount of time, sprint-write, then check your word count.

02. Turn off the wifi

I’ve mentioned this before as a productivity hack.Β Unless you’re writing in an online place, turning off the wifi may be just the trick to cut off distractions and focus, getting more words written.

03. Pomodoro technique

I talk about this technique pretty frequently. It’s basically the concept of writing non-stop for a certain amount of time, then taking a small break. For example:Β writing for 25 minutes, taking a five minute break, making a 30 minute session.Β You can play around with the time to figure out what you do best with.

04. Set Daily Goals

Figuring out your monthly goal will help you calculate your daily goal. Setting a clear, achievable goal will help you have something to set your sights on, and actually accomplish. It’s motivating to have something to work toward.

05. Silence your inner editor

You can’t get words written faster if you’re constantly looking back at what you just wrote to tweak it. Shove your Inner Editor in the closet and focus onΒ just writing.

06. Reward yourself!

How motivating! πŸ˜€ Just simply something like allowing yourself some reading time, your favorite snack or drink, or turning the wifi back on for a bit. πŸ˜‰ Rewards can be fun!

I hope you enjoyed this post and were able to use some of these tips to write faster. Hopefully this will come in handy for NaNo. πŸ˜‰ Tell me in the comments what tips you have to write faster!

Word sprints all the way!! I’m almost up to being able to write 500 words in fifteen minutes… almost. All the friends I sprint with write faster than I do, and that’s some serious motivation! πŸ‘
