Introducing My Futuristic Novel, Skyracer!

I am so excited to tell you all a bit more about my new (ish) project!

Within the last year and a half, I’ve been enjoying working on two books at the same time instead of just focusing on one. When I discovered this, I was working on Embers’ outline and took on another book idea. Sci-fi, of course. You know…very…futuristic…and stuff…

Let’s not waste any time and dive in! I’m super excited about this story. ๐Ÿ˜€

The cover

Okay…I am not a cover designer. This is just one I made for fun…

The blurb

Very rough blurb ahead. You have been warned.

***

The year is 2122, and New San Francisco is the hub of the dangerous sport of skyracing. But itโ€™s the element of danger that keeps Renna Starr in the game. Despite her motherโ€™s past as a famous skyracer, Renna rides on her own skill but stays anonymous. On her rise to the top of the sport, she becomes known as RS, the mysterious, young female racer that never shows her face. And now that the biggest skyracing tournament in the world is coming to her home city, she has a chance to really show what she can do.

Rennaโ€™s biggest competitor, Aylo Rush, isnโ€™t as enamored with her success as the media. Heโ€™ll do anything to get ahead and be on top.

But itโ€™s not all fame and fortune when Ayloโ€™s racing career takes a suspicious turn. When there are rumors about an assassination attempt on the District President, Rennaโ€™s sure Ayloโ€™s behind it. He seems to have higher aspirations than just being the best skyracer.

Now Rennaโ€™s on a race to win the biggest skyracing tournament in the world, get answers from her grandmother about her parents who disappeared years ago, and find out what Ayloโ€™s scheming. Meanwhile, she discovers her past may be more connected to him than she thought.

The characters

I enjoyed making these aesthetic/collage things so…ya know, enjoy. ๐Ÿ™‚

Skyrider character collages.png

Our MC, Renna Starr. Famous (but anonymous) skyracer who is the youngest ever to be in the top position she’s in. Competitive, fiery, independent, fearless, and maybe a lot a little full of herself.

Skyrider character collages (2).png

Renna’s grandmother, or ‘Gran’, who she’s lived with since her parents disappeared. Renna gets her fierce independence from Leia. She’s sophisticated, confident, and a fighter. She won’t let anyone push her or others around. But her soft side comes out with her granddaughter.

Skyrider character collages (3).png

One of Renna’s best friends. Her full name being embarrassing for her, she goes by Cassi. She’s girly, a fashionista, bubbly and enthusiastic. But she’ll stand up for her friends and be their biggest supporters.

Skyrider character collages (1)

Renna’s other best friend. He’s a second-generation immigrant from Japan. Loyal, humble, respectful. He doesn’t defend himself very well but he’ll always be there for his friends and family. When he’s not helping at his parent’s coffee shop, he’s pursuing his pro gaming career.

Skyrider character collages (4).png

And of course we’ve got our antagonist. Aylo is also a top skyracer and just as competitive as Renna. He can be greedy, prideful, pushy, and power-hungry. He always wants to be on top. But hey, underneath all that he’s got a backstory that’ll make you wanna hug him.

Q&A

Q: Why is she a skyracer?

A: After viewing this sport for the first time at age twelve, Renna was hooked. She loved the high-speeds and element of danger. And it gave her a chance to get out into the world a bit and show what she can do.

Q: How long will this book be?

A: I’m not sure at this moment about the exact word count. But novel-length probably. Maybe around 80k words.

Q: Will it be a series?

A: I am planning on this being a standalone.

Q: What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

A: I hope they feel invigorated from this futuristic story and Renna’s personality, and also learn a bit about being happy about how God made you, no matter the color of your skin (that’s part of the theme of this story).

Q: Whatโ€™s a quirk that your MC has?

A: She loves kickboxing. I don’t know if I’d call that a quirk, because it’s not that weird. But for my body, who has to learn some of this fighting stuff for research, thinks it’s kinda weird.

Q: Getting any inspiration from the current state of affairs? ย (Thatโ€™s mostly a joke ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

A: Lol, nope! But I can’t guarantee that I won’t get inspired from the current events.

Q: Is there a story behind Rennaโ€™s name?

A: No, not really. I just liked the name. ๐Ÿ™‚

Q: Whatโ€™s the neatest thing youโ€™ve learned about kickboxing?

A: I’ve learned that it’s not coming easy for me because I used to be in ballet and the movements weren’t neAR AS AGGRESSIVE AS THIS. But really, it is pretty fascinating to see all the little details that go into each move.

Q: What is your main theme for your book?

A: You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Take pride in the way God made you without putting others down. No matter your skin color, you are made in His image. And your worth is not in how you look or what you do.

Q: What is one weird thing you can tell of your main characters?

A: Leia, Renna’s grandmother, does kickboxing. ๐Ÿ˜€ She’s the one that taught Renna. I just think that’s kinda cool. Something I like about Renna and her two friends Viktor and Cassi is that they’re all different but still vibrant and unique in their own way. <3

Q: What had inspired this story idea?

A: It’s really hard to say (I feel that’s always my answer to this question). I think it started as just imagining this futuristic world and this girl who participates in some sort of sci-fi racing sport of some kind. A few sessions of brainstorming, daydreaming and Pinterest-scrolling later, Skyracer began to take form.

Q: What tense is it in (First person past/present, third person, etc.)?

A: It will be first person, present tense.

Q: Any fun gadgets you can share about (Vehicles, communication devices, etc.)?

A: The most interesting thing is probably the skybikes used for skyracing. Basically this is a motorcycle-like vehicle that hovers over projected race paths. It’s sleek and decked out with customizable lights. ๐Ÿ™‚

Q: Whatโ€™s the setting like?

A: Futuristic San Francisco, CA. This city really comes alive at night: skyraces are held at night and San Fran is a popular place for this sport, there are colored lights everywhere (from decor and advertisements on the buildings), and it’s just a colorful and sparkling sight.ย

I hope you all enjoyed learning a bit about Skyracer. I’m currently in the outlining stages of this project; working on the plot and scene outlines. If you want more updates on what I’m working on, then you can join my email list. ๐Ÿ™‚ Now tell me about what you’re working on!

Thank you!! ๐Ÿ˜€ I don’t really have any tips on blurb-writing (because I’m pretty new to it myself), but I did a search on blurb “formulas”/outlines and was able to find some good stuff from that. Thanks for reading, Elisha! <3

I was thinking the same as Kassie. A Japanese character, so cool. And the theme is something we all need to be reminded of. My WIP is a dystopian set in Japan. Which means most of my characters, if not all, are Japanese.

I LOVE this plot idea, and the characters look so fascinating and wonderful! Your collages are always so beautiful. Do you use a specific service to make them, or does Pinterest have a feature for collages? (I don’t have Pinterest yet, so I don’t know much about how it works XD)
Right now, I’m having a blast creating characters for a new superhero story I’ve been dreaming up for a while! I don’t have a super clear plot yet, but I’m falling in love with my characters. ๐Ÿ˜€
