5 (More) Stereotypes About Writers|true or false?

You all seemed to really enjoy the first writer stereotypes post I did so I thought it’d be cool to do a part 2!

Since, of course, there are plenty of stereotypes about us….

But anyway, are they true? False? Let’s see. I’ll give my own personal verdict, but tell me in the comments whether or not you agree or disagree.

Let’s go!

BLOG PINTEREST GRAPHICS (91)

I will be offering my own opinion as to what I think about these stereotypes–are they true or false?

01. Writers are walking dictionaries

I’m sorry, but I don’t read the dictionary on my free time. And no, just because I’m a writer doesn’t mean I know the definition for that hardly-ever-used word you just had to look up on the internet.

So yeah, this one’s false.

02. Writers can write anything

A fictional writer may not be able to hop over and writer non-fiction well. And a short story writer may have a hard time writing a full-length novel. A poet might have a hard time writing novels. A writer on one genre may not write well in another. We all have our areas of expertise. We’re all different. Not all kinds of writing are the same.

This one is false too, in my opinion.

03. They enjoy death/killing their characters or just making them struggle

Hey, you like a good story, right? 😛

But really, we love our characters just as much as the readers. Probably even more. But sometimes the characters just want to do things on their own without help so hey *backs away from computer* If they wanna go on that dangerous life-threatening adventure then go ahead!

This may be true sometimes. 😛

04. They are CRAZY fandom people

We all have a crazy, squealing, hyper inner fangirl (or fanboy) inside us. We may have multiple fandom we belong to, ships we go for, and books we hug. We have our tribes. But we are NOT crazy all the time. We are normal, I promise, and can carry conversations well with non-writers. 😉

We all love our fandoms, but this is false in my opinion.

05. They are always talking about their WIPs

Thinking. That is the key. We are always thinking about our WIPs. 😛 But really, no we do not always talk about our current project and all the woes of our characters’ journeys. We can talk about other subjects other than writing.

But hey if you’re a non-writer reading this, we SUPER DUPER appreciate it when people ask us about how our WIP’s are coming along. <3

This is false.

What do you think? What are your opinions on these stereotypes? Comment below any other stereotypes about writers/authors. If I collect enough, I may do a part three!

Stay safe, everyone!

Omygoosh. I totally get why people think these, but… really? Come on!!! If a cashier and a manager both work with money, are they both crazy rich? No!! Why would we know a zillion words? Words just fascinate is more than some non writers. Although I do admit that I slept with a dictionary in my bed at age four. Another stereo type?? That we come up with a zillion ideas in ten minutes basically. XD I hate that one. XD

YEEESSS! Ooh, that’s a frustrating stereotype too. A lot of people are just like “Oh, you write? Tell me a story RIGHT NOW.” XD

I always thought of nerdy homeschoolers as the walking dictionaries. Hehe! Like the ones who do state or national spelling bees. And I was homeschooled, but I was definitely not a walking dictionary. 🙂

And yeah, I think about my WIPs all the time, but hardly ever talk about it unless someone asks and then I struggle with words to explain. 🙂

      Lol, same XD
Right! It’s hard for us to even explain all of the awesomeness of our WIPs. 😉

I agree with your all your answers. 😀

I’m definitely NOT a walking dictionary, most of the time I have to have Merriam Webster open while I’m writing. 😛 I have a really hard time writing good short stories, I can’t write poetry for the life of me, and I write in like three genres…everything else is a mystery to me! 😂 I sort of, kind of, sometimes enjoy hurting, killing my characters. Most of the time I feel sad because they’re my frens. I LOVE my fandoms, but I almost equally obsessed with puppies and music…and food. 😉 I actually hardly ever talk about my WIP outside of my family and a very few select friends. I’m afraid I’ll just bore people…or they’ll think my ideas sound dumb, so yeah, mostly I spend a lot of time thinking about my WIP.

This was so fun, Jenna! Great post! 😊

That’s awesome! It’s time to debunk these myths about writers the world seem to believe. 😉 Thanks for reading! I’m glad you found it fun! <3

I WISH I could write anything. But I can’t. (I can’t write middles. I always give out around the middle of a novel.)

I really don’t like killing off characters. I’ve never understood the people who say they take joy in doing that. If I kill off the character, then I can’t torture them anymore! I want them to live so I can keep being mean to them. 🙂

SAME! It would be incredible to be able to write anything.
I know right? How can we make their lives miserable if they’re dead? 😉

I would say too that all of these are false including enjoying death, killing and making characters struggle. Yeah, I let those things happen, planned those those things to happen but I can’t say I really enjoy doing them. I don’t enjoy death, But I include it because (1). it is realistic if there is a war going on or there is many fights, (2). it is part of life. I’m also a big believer of purposeful deaths. And characters struggling is realistic. If they don’t have problems they are not true to real life. Sometimes I do enjoy the thought of future readers getting upset about a character’s death, but I feel that is different? 😂

That’s so true! We don’t enjoy death, but it is a part of life. And, tbh, it sometimes serves the story so much better/makes it more powerful to have a certain character die.
      Thanks for reading, Miranda! <3

Haha YES those stereotypes are so annoying! People are always like “She’s practically a dictionary” but when I write, I literally have to have my dictionary nearby just to look up words that I KNOW but can’t be sure about… Also, we don’t talk about our WIPs all the time! And we’re not total geeks, lol.

I know right? I don’t know how many times I’ve looked up the meaning of a word while writing. XD

*dies laughing* This. Is. Gold. 👏🏻
    1. Falseeee if this were true I wouldn’t catch myself using either “just” or “still” every other sentence… 😜
    2. could this be more false
    3. I… don’t… *enjoy* it. But it has to be done, and I wouldn’t write a story without pain and death bc that’s life sometimes… but I wouldn’t say I enjoy it… 😂
    4. This is lowkey true, but that’s just for me. Plus, I don’t have any “real” fandoms except my own stories and a friend’s, which still totally counts, but…. 🤣
    5. Some people who know me in person still don’t know I’m a writer so… 😁
PLEASEEE do a part three… let’s see… that writers are obsessed with becoming bestselling authors? That we’re all at least a little bit of our characters?
