Letter to the 2021 Writer

composition of clipboard and stationery

I think we all have some specific hopes for 2021.

Maybe more than a few…maybe ten…maybe a million. No matter who you are, you were most likely affected by what 2020 dealt us. Even though 2021 doesn’t promise to be better, I’m still looking forward to it. And here’s a letter to every writer heading into this new year…

Dear 2021 writer,

Wow. You made it. 2020 was harsh, and you battled your way to the end. A fresh, new year is on the horizon. A new start. New opportunities.

Can we do something crazy? Let’s put what happened in 2020 behind us. Yes, it was a disaster of a year in a lot of ways. Keep what you learned during that trial, but forget the rest. We’re moving on. Even though 2021 could just be a repeat (or worse), look ahead to the new year with renewed hope. Because even if it is just as bad as this year was, you’re stronger now.

Don’t focus on the disturbing things that are happening, could happen, probably will happen. That will drag you down. Focus on the good, the people around you, and your art. Think of the new amazing stories you’re going to craft this year. Think of the people you’re going to reach.

Now is a great time to be a writer. Step into 2021 with courage and bravery. Promise to create wildly and freely. Don’t let things get you down, because there may be a lot that will try. In this new year, you might stumble and falls sometimes, but always always get back up.

I’m pretty positive God is going to use 2020’s events to shape our writing in some way. Maybe to make us stronger, more resilient. Maybe to push us to keep crafting stories no matter what’s going on. Because the world needs your stories. So keep writing.

Write on,

Jenna

I’m honestly really looking forward to this new year. Of course, I always look forward to a new year filled with new possibilities. But I’m not necessarily just looking for 2020 to be over (though that will be nice), I’m just ready for a fresh start. No matter what 2021 hands us, I’m convinced we can handle it. Because we have an amazing God who is our source of strength now and forever.

What are you looking forward to in 2021?

Thank you for your encouraging letter, Jenna. Most of 2020 was better for me than 2019, honestly. But this last month has brought multiple hardships I wasn’t expecting. So, I’m ending the year on a downer note. I appreciate your letter, as it’s reminded me to stay focused on God and remember He’ll be faithful to get me through. Thanks.

So much encouragement here! This part especially resonated with me:

Don’t focus on the disturbing things that are happening, could happen, probably will happen. That will drag you down.

That became a HUGE battle for me this year, one that I feel like I am finally getting a handle on. How to look away from the overwhelming sorrow and evil and misery before it, well, overwhelms me. It only works if I look to God instead.

    Happy new year!

This letter is so beautiful and good and just thank you for writing it. <3 2020 wasn't hard for me like it was for other people, overall it was a pretty decent year for me, but I still needed this reminder going into 2021, and honestly all of the years ahead. <3
