If you’re new here, Coffee Talks is a series where I just rant about everything and anything. Check out the most recent Coffee Talks here. Something new I’ve been doing is answering a few of your questions while I’m at it. Okay, time to “set the scene”…

Spring is here. Quarantine is over. πŸ˜‰ So we meet at a bright and airy corner coffee shop. Wide, floor-to-ceiling windows let in the afternoon sunlight. You can hear the hum of traffic and enjoy watching the people pass by on the sidewalk from your small table in the corner. The activity in the coffee shop is calm. You close your eyes to let your other senses enjoy the experience. Deep, roasted smell of coffee, soft conversation, classical music, and the clank of mugs. Maybe you order an iced coffee drink, because the weather is warming up. Sunshine warms your face.

Now take a deep, slow breath.Β

Ready?

Quarantine has been one crazy ride, hasn’t it? My family continues to pray for all those in our country effected by the coronavirus. But there are always silver linings to any situation, even if you don’t always see them. I think God has been teaching me to slow down and be still, spend more time in the Bible and just let my mind breathe. Without the distraction of the activities we once had before quarantine, it’s been easier to do this. I’ve also been enjoying spending more time with my family, getting to write more, and workout more. I have really been grateful for my family; this group of people that I can be stuck in quarantine with for months and not get tired of. πŸ™‚ <3

And I’ve realized how much of an introvert I am because of how I’m thriving staying home so much. XD

Q: How to make great book titles?

A: I’ve never been great at titling, so here’s a post from Self-Publishing School on that.

Q: What is that short story I see there in the side bar?

A: Oh, a secret project maybe??? πŸ˜› No, it’s not really secret. It’s just something that I started at the drop of the hat. It’s a futuristic Red Riding Hood Retelling that I am completely writing by the seat of my pants! Which is very unlike me. Trying to figure out if this is even wise or not. XD

One thing I have been dying to get back to after quarantine is GOING TO THE STABLE! I miss riding the horses and just being around the barn. My body craves the hard work of riding and I really want to keep learning about horsemanship. And there have been so many new things happening at my stable while I’m away and it just KILLS ME.Β

With the extra time in quarantine, I’ve been able to post a little more on Instagram (because I hadn’t had as much time to take photos). I have some fresh, new ideas for future posts, so I’m pretty excited about that. πŸ˜€ I’ve also had more time for reading and it has been GOOD. Including a couple new releases that I was super pumped about!

Q: How do you pick what songs to put on your Spotify playlists for your books?

A: I also start with Audiomachine. The genres that I write in usually fit well with the music they produce. I also like to look for songs from movie soundtracks that are similar to the project I’m working on. Yes, Embers has some scores from Marvel movies. πŸ˜‰

Q: Any tips on blurbs? What to do and not to do?

A: I’m not super great at this either, so here’s a post from Reedsy about it.

Well, that’s pretty much the end of my ramble for today! Maybe the next Coffee Talk will be longer, but these were the biggest things on my mind right now. Feel free to rant and share your thoughts in the comments! Is quarantine ending for you?

Another quick announcement before I go; next week I will be doing a post where I answer any and all writing questions! I don’t claim to be an expert, so if you ask something that I can’t answer, I will research it and provide you with some helpful links. πŸ˜‰ So drop your writing questions below, email me, or keep an eye on my Instagram where I will be collecting questions there too.

I hope you all are staying safe and healthy. <3

Yes, I totally agree with you with quarantine helping us with slowing down and being still in Him. I have been learning in that area too, particularly managing time better with Him in control.
Thanks for the links and I can’t wait to read your short story!

    I forgot the questions!
    – How do you fix flat characters?
    – How do you make sure you similar characters?
    – Do you have character songs?
    – Do you all your research before you write or during or after? Or all?
    – How do you fix plot holes?
    – Is first person or third person, past tense or present tense is your favourite form of POV? Why do you did choose to do that?
    – Do you like more than one POV and have you done it before?

Hi, Miranda! I’m working on the post answering all these awesome writing questions, and there’s one of yours I don’t quite understand. This one: “How do you make sure you similar characters?” Would you be able to explain it a bit for me?

Gladly. 😊 What I meant with that question was, “How do you make sure you don’t have similar characters?” (Silly hands didn’t write my thoughts down properly. 😝)

That retelling sounds INCREDIBLE – good luck!!!
(also yes, completely relate to you with thriving on all this alone time. I guess that’s one positive thing about quarantine??? XD)

I love people watching!! 🀩 (my brother and I play this game where we make up names for the people we see walking by 😝)
I am so glad to get to be out and about again… I’m such an introvert, I’ve never understood why I need to just know other people exist. πŸ˜†
And I so missed riding during quarantine… hopefully I can get back into that again soon…
I do the same thing with soundtracks and story playlists… β€œWe Were Soldiers” is so perfect for my intense war story… πŸ’” Otherwise I collect relevant songs off the radio. 😝
(fun random fact, I’m sitting here drinking cold tea while I’m reading this which fit the setting perfect 🀩)

That’s awesome! Reminds me of when my cousin and I were making up backstory for random strangers we passed by XD
I’m so glad you can go out again! Yes, I guess even introverts need people. πŸ˜‰
I hope you can get back into riding again soon, too! <3

Yay, sounds like you fit the description of a perfect Coffee Talks reader! πŸ˜€ <3
